There
are so many things to see and do in Cozumel. The island is full
of Mexican charm — the atmosphere is relaxed and gracious.
Given the importance of tourism to the local economy, English
is widely spoken.
The
only town on the island is San Miguel de Cozumel and it's
where you will find all amenities such as restaurants,
bars, tour companies,
grocery stores and banks. The town is approximately 5 miles
from the villas.
The
waterfront Avenida Rafael Melgar and the main town sqare, Plaza
Del Sol, is usually bustling with activity by locals and tourists
alike enjoying the numerous restaurants and shopping including
traditional Mexican souvenirs and arts and crafts. We suggest
that you wander off the beaten track to discover a more vibrant
local scene (and cheaper prices!). A couple of our favourite
restaurants include Pancho's Backyard for Mexican cuisine and
Guido's for authentic Italian. When you get tired of shopping,
pay a visit to the Museo de la Isla de Cozumel for an informative
and interesting introduction to the island's geography and Mayan
history.
Definitely set aside some time to explore the Mayan ruins which are located at
the north end of the island. The ruins at San Gervasio are the largest and make
for a very interesting half-day excursion.
Exploring
other attractions in the Mayan Riviera area is also easy as the mainland is
accessible via a high-speed ferry. The trip takes approximately 30 minutes
and ferries leave every hour to and from the island beginning in the early
morning until nearly midnight (check schedule). Day adventures to Tulum, Playa
del Carmen, Cancun or Chichen Itza are all possible. For a map of Cozumel,
